January is Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month – About

More than 300 resorts from Alaska to North Carolina are participating in Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month 2012.

Ski resorts are offering special free or reduced price ski and snowboard packages which generally consist of a lesson, lift ticket and rentals during January to get children and adults out on the slopes to learn an outdoor winter activity.

At Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month you will findlinks to learning programs throughout the U.S. that provides an opportunity for skiers and riders to take lessons at reduced rates or, in some cases, free of charge.

“The best way to learn how to ski or snowboard is to take lessons from a professional instructor who is trained to provide state-of-the-art information and technique” said Mary Jo Tarallo, director of Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month. “We advise people to resist the temptation to learn from a friend, family member or significant other”.

An added benefit to learning to ski or snowboard is that snowsports offers a way to get some winter outdoor exercise and burn calories. Research indicates that a 155 pound adult can burn 422 calories an hour skiing at a moderate speed and a 70 pound youth can burn almost 185 calories at a moderate speed. An adult between 110 – 200 pounds can burn between 250 – 630 calories per hour snowboarding.

“Childhood obesity is at an all time high in the U.S. and people tend to be more sedentary in the winter,” added Tarallo. “Our slogan is ‘Humans Were Never Meant to Hibernate’. We hope that children and adults will look at skiing and snowboarding as a way to be active all year long.”

Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month is an industry initiative organized by the National Ski Areas Association, the Professional Ski Instructors of America, the American Association of Snowboard Instructors, SnowSports Industries America, the National Ski Patrol, numerous state and regional resort associations, rep associations, retailers and the snow sports media.
