The 18th annual World Ski and Snowboard Festival (WSSF) has finally kicked off in Whistler, BC, taking over for the next ten days and nights. The incredible line up of artists will begin the Outdoor Concert Series on the Main Stage in Skier’s Plaza at the base of Whistler Mountain. At 4pm, DiRTY RADiO will play a free show after an opening set from One Bad Son. Then it’s off to the State of the ART Opening Party at the Whistler Conference Centre.
Also a free event, the Opening Party offers art lovers the only free nighttime viewing of the State of the ART gallery. Moving forward, the State of the ART gallery will be open from 12pm to 6pm daily with no admission fee. For those who want to keep things going late into the night, DiRTY RADiO will be playing a Bud Light Freeride Club Series concert at Merlin’s Bar at the base of Blackcomb Mountain starting at 9:30pm.
Starting April 13 to the 15th, the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) will begin the World Skiing Invitational (WSI) events and will be available live at http://live.eim-solutions.com/wsi2013. The WSI Big Air Competition will kick off the list of events on Saturday and qualifiers will start at 5pm with the Finals wrapping up at 6:30pm. To end the evening right, rap legend Nas will hit the mainstage for a free performance, making Skier’s Plaza the hot spot in Whistler. Then partying will flow into the early morning hours with Questlove and Mat the Alien playing from 10pm t0 4am at the Whistler Conference Center. Tickets to The BEGINNING are still available for purchase online at wssf.com or in person at the Whistler Activity Centre to those over 19 years of age.
The WSI Slopestyle Qualifiers in the highest level terrain park on Blackcomb Mountain will end the competitive events on weekend one of WSSF from 11:45am-3:00pm. More free live shows to follow as Keller Williams and Kim Churchill take to the Outdoor Concert Series Main Stage at 2:30pm. To end the day right, the Mountain Multiplicity Show will feature presentations from the who’s who of the ‘mountain kingdom’ in the Whistler Conference Center.
The WSSF activities will go against societal norms by keeping the action flowing through the regular work week with endless competition, concerts and parties. The WSI Men’s and Women’s Slopestyle Finals will take place in the Highest Level Park on Blackcomb Mountain from 1:45pm to 3pm, while Anuhea and Sydney York perform on the Outdoor Concert Series Main Stage beginning at 2:30pm.
WSSF is excited to announce Whistler’s first ever Roller Derby battle when Whistler’s Black Diamond Betties challenge the Squamish Sea to Sky Sirens at Vengeance in the Valley in the Whistler Conference Centre. Purchase tickets for Vengeance in the Valley at the Whistler Activity Centre. Bud Light Freeride Club Series will round out the night with another performance from Keller Williams at The Longhorn Saloon at the base of Whistler Mountain starting at 9:30pm.
The first half of the World Ski and Snowboard Festival wraps up with free performances on the Main Stage by the CFOX Seed Band Winners, including We Hunt Buffalo, Static in the Stars, and Fields of Green. After that, the WSSF signature multimedia events begin with the OLYMPUS 72 Hour Filmmaker Showdown at the Whistler Conference Centre. Doors open at 8pm with the show beginning at 9pm.
The five more days packed with action will include The Shred Show, Presented by Monster Energy snowboarding events, the OLYMPUS 72 Hour Filmmaker ENCORE Presentation, The OLYMPUS Pro Photographer Showdown and Intersection.
