At Stratton, the birthplace of Burton Snowboards, one day is not enough to honor the riders, lifestyle and love of the mountain that make snowboarding great. Stratton’s Snowboard Celebration week will kick off December 10 with a moonlight hike up Suntanner and culminate on World Snowboarding Day on December 18.
Snowboarding and Stratton go all the way back to the early days of the sport. Legend says that Jake Burton developed his boards here, hiking Suntanner and riding Stratton by moonlight. Stratton was one of the first resorts to formally welcome snowboards on the hill, later becoming the home of the US Open and Olympic medalists Ross Powers and Lindsay Jacobellis.
This year, we commemorate Stratton’s 50th Anniversary and the 30th annual US Snowboarding Open as we celebrate the sport, the culture, and the launch of Burton’s new learning program, Experience Snowboarding. The mountain will host on-snow demos, clinics with pros, competitions and movies all week long. It all begins on December 10 with a moonlight hike up Suntanner – just as Jake Burton did when he was crafting his first snowboard.
